Do the different DocNames have to be in separate cells, or can you have one cell per tag, with each applicable docname in that cell?

I just saw the raw data. I'm trying to see what you are trying to accomplish. Is this supposed to be a VBA script or done manually?

hi rfportilla,
just done manually.... (i mostly work with excel and access from a vba point of view, however,
i've not had success with the grouping feature using the Excel interface and wanted to learn how
to group from a user point of view)

Hi ProdOps,
tx for writing...
i work with pivot tables rarely, as well, sigh....
so i explored a little the pivot tool bar etc.
and found this screen, screen shot below
A very good idea on your part to take a pivot table approach...
questions, pls:
===========
a) Are you "driving on the key of a composite key" of tag+docname?
b) how did the pivot tabel to "null" COLUMN a for subsequent rows "in the group"

Hi rfportilla,
i think i understand what you said, that is:
a separator row for each group....
so i tried it .... below is a mini xls and a screen shot....
and it grouped as one group instead of 2 groups....
pls advise, tx, s

Hi Jerry,
i got it, now....tx for explaining
below is screenshot from creating pivot from scratch.....
VERY IMPORTANT....
I want to treat everyone respectfully in terms of closing out this post.....
- ploftin - alerted me to data/group by with a web link
- rfplotilla - alerted me to category headings for each group of rows
- prodOPs - alerted me to another method, pivot tables, that solved my problem for now
yet from a pivot table perspective
part of me, wants to open a new post for pivot tables for ProdOPs, but then someone else could
answer if they were really fast.....
so pls forgive me, if it does not come out fair this time.....sorry, tx, s

Sandra - I do this because I enjoy it and I learn something new everyday. However you allocate points is fine with me. I am glad you learned several solutions.

tx for writing....
i appreciate that you pointed me to Data/Grouping
but it does not work.....
a) if i highlight all the rows, it becomes one group
b) it work a little, if i highlight the first set, and click grouping
but when i hide the next set, it gets included with the first
c) was hoping that excel would analyze and group all rows automatically....'
tx, s
also, i wanted excel
