I have a customer's computer that would not accept XP Service Pack 3. The OS is XP Media Center edition. The service pack appeared to be partially installed and was producing an error that is only supposed to occur in SP-2. There was also evidence of virus activity - the well known Fake Alert variety. I cleaned the virus with Combo FIx, and checked it with Malwarebtes.
I tried to slipstream SP2 onto the Dell installation CD, but whe I tested it, the software did not recognize that my test disk.was there. I was able to install the OS on the test disk and install SP3.
I then uninstalled the apparently faulty SP3 from the original disk and cloned the original onto a test disk. The cloned drive attempted to boot, but then I was presented with a flshinf screen that I couldnot get past.
Putting the original disk back in the computer, I ran checkdisk. I planned on running SFC to be sure I had everything, but when the computer started after running chkdsk, I saw Stop Error 0x00000071. I get that on every reboot since then.
What do I have to do to get this computer back to an operational state?
