ISSET_SE general protection fault

I am trying to reinstall a piece of old (Win98 I believe) software which was previously running very happily on a Windows 7 machine. Trying to reinstall however produces the following message.

ISSET_SE caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>16F7:0223[3/4] ISSET_SE will close.

Running the installer again produces a different error message stating that NTVDM.EXE has stopped working.

These two error messages then alternate each time the installer is run (unless I kill the NTVDM process manually).

Prior to the reinstallation I just uninstalled the software in the normal way. Since then I have also cleaned the registry of all mention of it, as well as removing some physical files left over.

I am aware of the article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q192890/
Unfortunately I am not running any of the software mentioned (I have unistalled my virus scanner as well).

I am attempting to install from the local admin account - I have also attempted to run the installer in various compatibiltity modes etc.

My best advise is to install the Windows XP mode from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

If you have Win 7 basic you wont be able to so I hope that's not the case

But you will be able to run WinXp install your program there xp OS should support your win98 Software

Not a viable option I'm afraid - I know that the software is compatible with Win 7 as it was previously running without problems.
So what has changed since it was running and now? And what version of Win7 are you running?
It's a Win 7 pro system.

I'm not entirely sure what has happened to make the installer unhappy - the software is a CRM app running on Pervasive SQLi 2000 which we have inherited the support of. Since the software is no longer supported by the application manufacturers and is prone to corruptions, the usual course of action when it breaks is to uninstall and reinstall. Unfortunately this time I can't do the reinstall...
