How to enable IMAP port 143 in Exchange Server 2003?
Hello,

We have a server running on Exchange 2003, of course OS is Server 2003 R2 x64 edition. One of our user tries to setup e-mail in his MacBook (LeoPard OS.) Mail app. But it keep giving timeout error message. He tries to connect to Exchange using IMAP. Apple Mail application only provides 3 ways to connect: POP, IMAP and Exchange 2007.

After that I used mxtoolbox.com to verify port numbers. The results screenshot is attached. As per the results, the IMAP port 143 is disabled.

How can I enable IMAP (port 143) on Exchange Server 2003. We have a dedicated IP address. i.e.,

mail.domain.com --> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Any further quick help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! User generated image

I already did that. I also assigned local system IP with correct IMAP port 143 in the protocol configuration. I restarted the service. But when I try to telnet port 143 from exchange server, it's look like it's responding. But when I try to setup mail in Outlook as IMAP, it shows error message.

I'm using Symantec EndPoint Protection (latest version.) Is there any tool to monitor ports?

I scanned network using Advanced Port Scanner and the screenshot is attached. It also indicates that the port 143 is disabled. Is there any registry hack to open the port 143?

Check your firewall/antivir suite on the server.

But I only installed Antivirus and Antispam protection modules. I recently upgraded software on this server to latest version.

I even login into Domain Controller (where SEP is installed) and added a custom rule to allow IMAP port 143. And then updated the policy.

I'm testing from inside network. I ran above command on Exchange server and it shows that port 143 is LISTENING.

Hurry! I tried to setup same account in Outlook using IMAP. I just referred this thread and entered the username as domain/username and it's worked! Now I'm able to setup and access Exchange mail through IMAP in Outlook 2007.

I will test the same in Mac Mail later today. Another user is using Entourage, but he added mail as Exchange account. I think it should work if I enter username as above.

OK - looks like it was a simple problem with the way the user name was entered, I guess.
