Steelhead Riverbed Failure: Process failure: vix_wrapperd

Hello -

One of our Riverbed had some type of hiccup over night.

Got this error on Riverbed.  This riverbeds are generally pretty stable so if they spit out a error like this,  I would like to see what is going on.  Most likely answer will be a random software bug,  that will require an OS upgrade to correct. Anyone had this before?

That is the VMware API handling library - vix_wrapperd.

Are you running RSP on your Steelhead?  If so, can you let me know if you are running VMs on RSP?  Or Steelhead Mobile Virtual?

If not, you can disable RSP and them you will not see this error again.

PS> 6.1.1a is the current firmware for the Steelhead and 6.1 is the current for RSP.  You should upgrade both of these.

Thanks for response.  What is RSP?

This is a Riverbed Steelhead model 1050L .  Used for network utilization.  What does it have to do with VMWare?
I started with Experts Exchange in 2004 and it's been a mainstay of my professional computing life since. It helped me launch a career as a programmer / Oracle data analyst

RSP = Riverbed Services Platform

If you have RSP enabled, you can run VMs right on the Steelhead.  You can read more about it here:
http://www.riverbed.com/us/products/steelhead_appliance/rsp.php

Look under configuration> Branch Services> RSP.  If you are not using it, turn it off.

Yes, we are using RSP (VMWARE running on riverbed) on that Riverbed.  Its running a VM of the print server.

Well, it looks like it crashed.  I woudl reccomend upgrading both the RiOS and RSP.

Thanks!  I also heard there is some sequence upgrading RSP first follow by RiOS.  Is that true?

Is 6.1.1a and 6.1 the latest reseases for RiOS and RSP?

Consulted with Riverbed support.  Looks like there are five common bugs regarding thta same issue.  I sent them a system dump so they examine and get back to me.  We'll see what they have to say.

From tech support:
The bug is fixed in RiOS v.6.0.2.  It deals with the issues related to communication to RSP containers. FYI, vix_wrapperd is a wrapper process to deal with the VMware VI calls.  Upon the process failure on this Steelhead, it was restarted and it is running as indicated by the process status.
This issue is not critical.
