Goole analytics - URL used

Hi,

I am working with a client on their webmaster tools and Analytics, which was set up for them by someone else.

Within their Webmaster Tools the prefered domain is set up to be www.exmaple.com and they have verified that they own example.com URL as well.

Yet in the Analytics set up it appears http://example.com is being used. I do not have edit user status so I cannot double check what the actual web address is either www. or without the www.

So if I do any offsite seo should I use in any back links, anchor text  http://example.com or http://www.example.com?

Or is it that it makes no difference?

You'll want to force the site to go one way or another and set up your links how you chose...it's personal preference. You can do this with a .htaccess file:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite\.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Or, use a URL rewrite in IIS

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms972974.aspx

Analytics will only track www or no www, not both.

I see...so I need to tell webmaster tools to stop following www. as the main domain and tell it to select no www.

Then all my back links generated should be no www?

PS remember I cannot change the Analytics code and make the analytics www.  as I said it is monitoring no www.

Correct...after you force the browser to remove www and change all the links it will monitor all the traffic correctly.
