Turns out this was caused by the virus "ByteVerify.G" which was in the Java folder of the user's Application Data Folder.

Here is the kb from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Exploit%3aJava%2fByteVerify.G

I was able to remove the virus, after it caused a blue screen again. I had to reinstall the old image, put back the user's files and then run a Microsoft Security Essentials scan before the virus had a chance to cause the problem again. It found the virus file and removed it. Everything seems to be fine now.
