How do I make use of Recovered MDaemon MSG Files?

Hi Experts,

We have recently migrated our mail server away from MDaemon 9.something (can't remember) to Exchange 2010.  I still have all users' old IMAP accounts saved on tape, however the MDaemon server itself no longer exists.

The issue I have is: I have had to restore a user's mailbox from tape.  The restore itself went fine, I can see a number of .msg files in Windows Explorer.  The thing is, I can't open them.

Outlook gives a "Cannot open , might be permsiions..." error, Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail do nothing.  If I drag the msg file into an Outlook folder and try to view it in the reading pane I get the "cannot be previewed b/c of an error......" problem.  I've tried a couple of free MSG file viewers.  The most useful one is called "Viewer for MS Outlook Messages" and when I browse to the msg files I get a popup window stating "File <filename> is not a valid file (compund storage)".  THE ONLY THING THAT DOES WORK: viewing the file in Notepad.

The problem with this is the user wants the emails back "as normal emails" that they can make full use of within Outlook.

Short of re-creating an MDaemon mail server to re-import these emails into Outlook, does anyone have any ideas?

Hi chcw,

All a little pointless now.  A user chucked a minor fit and we re-installed MDaemon server and retrieved the mail that way.

Thanks for the comment though :-)
