This utility works well with APC UPS devices, is open source and free.

I'm not sure if APC are the most commpn UPS around but it's what we use. The devices themselves are fine but the software they ship with them is garbage, I find apcupsd much more useful and stable.

Apcupsd is easy to use in simple configurations but can be a little fiddly in more complex setups, especially if you use it in Windows. That is my experience anyway.

Be sure to read the documentation well beforehand and test your setup extensively.

Apcupsd is free as in free speech and free as in free beer.
Good luck.
