Hello,

I am trying to find a way to upgrade SQL 2008 to R2. My scenario is the following:

A) Log Shipping between a Primary and Secondary Server

B) (1) SQL Server 2008 Cluster as the PRIMARY

C) (1) SQL Server 2008 as the SECONDARY (Read-only mode) because of log shipping.

D) Windows Server 2008 on all the servers

What is the best way to accomplish an upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 on both Primary and Secondary without causing a disaster?

Thank you,

So you have one cluster at your primary site and a standalone machine at your secondary site?

If that is the case I would do the following:

1. Upgrade the secondary (standalone) machine to SQL 2008 R2. Log shipping should still work although it must be configured in NORECOVERY mode i.e. not STANDBY. If you are not currently in this mode I would change that as your first task. The database cannot be brought online because it would try to upgrade the database to a R2 version which won't be possible.

2. Upgrade the Primary cluster. The log shipping should get upgraded and continue to restore to the newly upgraded standby server.

Obviously you should test this process in a test environment etc.,
