how to do md5 check on downloaded application in linux

Dear Experts:

I am having rhel5.5 installed snort for IDS and also downloaded the rules i,e snortrules-snapshot-2900.tar.gz and an md5 file can anybody please help me step by step how to do the md5 check.

1- there should be a hash on the site your downloaded the rules from

2- run md5sum on the file as follows

md5sum filename

This would produce a hash , compare it with the one available on the site they should match
