Playing streaming Windows Media Content with Roaming Profiles freezes.

I have one of those pull my hair out sort of issues here...

I currently have a W2k3 domain with about 150 computers (a mixture of windows 7 and Windows XP machines of different ages)...all setup with Roaming profiles and redirected folders.

On quite a few of these machines, whenever we play streaming windows media content on a website through a browser, Windows Media player freezes (resource usage shoots to 30-40 percent) and I never see the "buffering bar" at the bottom.

Seems to be some sort of roaming profile issue, but for the life of me I cant figure out what it is. I dont have a lot of settings setup through Group Policy at all.

WMP version does not seem to matter, although I seem to have more luck with things working right on Windows XP with WMP10.

Any clues on where to look??

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Can you please post the output of the following text file? Change the servernames if desired....

Curious to see exactly whats redirected where....

Any chance the Local Settings\Temp directory isnt excluded?

Another player like VLC play any better?
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders">sf.txt
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders">>sf.txt
notepad sf.txt

Also, in regards to "resource usage shoots to 30-40 percent"

What spikes the CPU, wmplayer.exe?

Just for giggles in teh Shell Folders value above for "My Video".....

Create the folder "My Videos" in "\\conbmw-dc01\Redirected\bmwtest\My Documents\My Videos". Thats probably why it is an empty value. They usually blank if they cannot be resolved after redirection......

Might be trying to find that folder....

Didnt seem to help anything. I do think it is something to do with the docs redirection, maybe even with directing Application Data...but it seems like Microsoft would of know if it screwed things up or not.

Guess I will keep lookin.

Can you get a capture of wmplayer.exe when it spikes the CPU?

Process Explorer
http://live.sysinternals.com/procexp.exe

Double click wmplayer.exe, and go to the Threads Tab. Take a screenshot, and double click the CPU hog thats eating the CPU there. Take another screenshot and please post... Might give some insight.....

Process Monitor
http://live.sysinternals.com/procmon.exe

Might want to check to see if it cannot find somehting that it is looking for..... I wouldnt even turn on reg filtering to start with, just the files, and only include wmplayer.exe.....

Tracked it to an issue with roaming profiles. Had no issues until I added my test user to that group.

Now will have to backtrack from there.

Thanks for help so far.

NP. I thought we knew it was a Roaming Issue?

This gave me the place to start. The issue turned out to be an issue with "automatic connection" not being clicked in IE...which is strange because I dont have it set to disable in any of my GP rules. It only clicks off when making a policy with Redirected Folders. Might be a bug, who knows.

Do appreciate the help, and sorry for the waste of time.
