Is it possible to make my Sharepoint calendar my default calendar in Outlook?

More to the point, is it possible to send (email) a meeting request from my Sharepoint calendar to someone outside the company and have them reply to it?

Hi, computerconcepts.

That's not possible.  The default calendar is always the calendar associated with where mail is delivered.  If your mail is on an Exchange server, then that's the online mailbox.  If you are using internet mail, then that's a PST file.  This cannot be changed.
