Windows Media player 11 codacs
I have run in to this problem several times and have not been able to find a solution.
Windows XP SP3 with Windows Media Player 11.
When a user tries to play any audio file, including .wav or mp3, media player will generate an error that it cannot play the file because it does not have the codac installed. These are standard files that play on all other machines just fine. When I look at the codecs installed by using the help menu, the machine with the issue shows the following as being installed.
ACM AC3Filter AC3/DTS codec 0001
ACM Microsoft PCM Converter 0001
DMO WMAudio Decoder DMO 0160, 0161, 0162, 0163 wmadmod.dll 11.0.5721.5262
DMO WMAPro over S/PDIF DMO 0162 wmadmod.dll 11.0.5721.5262
DMO WMA Voice Decoder DMO 000A, 000B wmspdmod.dll 11.0.5721.5263
A machine that plays the files correctly shows these codacs installed.

I have checked the machine that will not play audio and the files exist in the same locations. I have tried un-installing media player and re-installing without any effect. I have also tried manually installing additional codacs without luck. Is there anyway to get the default audio codacs properly installed withour re-installing the entire operating system?

I would use an alternative player.
Try the K-Lite MAXimum codec pack, a very popular set, works great w/WMP.
2nd vote for K-Lite (give Bob the credit)... I don't know how your original codecs got jacked-up but K-Lite codecs will work well for you.
when you say "I have tried manually installing with no luck"... what do you mean when you say "no luck"?

Did you try K-Lite Mega Codec Pack?

Download the player from http://www.filehippo.com/download_windows_media_player/tech/ and try that.
No joy then go the K-Lite Codec Pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm (you've got a wide choice there) or the CCCP Pack http://cccp-project.net/
The last one is getting popular compared against the K-Lite pack. Note that the K-Lite codec pack will probably include the G-Spot util and the K-Lite Codec tool which may help in solving your code problems.

I would suggest that you use VLC media player.

Also, try opening Dial-a-fix (http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles), check all checkboxes under the "Registration center" section and click "GO".

Using another player is not an option, These are corporate machines and the software needs to be consistant across all computers. As I said, I have already tried installing additional codacs, including K-lite but none had any effect. The codacs posted above are all that show, even after the other codacs have been installed.
I will take a look at the dial-a-fix app when I return to the office on Monday.
