joomla search and category dropdown

Is there a way to allow a user to either search through all of the categories for a particular page or allow the user to select a category from a dropdown and narrow the search to the dropdown selection? First, what table would contain the categories that I need to search through? Can I plug into any existing search capabilities joomla currently has? Are there any plugins that already provide this functionality? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This reminds me of Google customized searches combined with a drop-down form, so maybe needs a little coding for the presentation. Go for it if that is what you want. I am not aware of a Joomla extension that does that out of the box.

Well it has been a while since I have set up a google search but i remember it used to be based simply on URLs. So if you have a menu item that displays the category you want to search you would simply use that URL as the parameter in the google customized search. If you do not have this as part of your main public menus then you could set it up on an inconspicuous second menu. But it has been a while since I have set up a google customized search so I would check that out first.
