Can Outlook 2011 connect to Exchange 2003 mailbox

We have an Exchange 2003 Back-End server and an Exchange 2003 Front-End Server.  I have recently added an Exchange 2007 CAS server and would like to ultimately remove the 2003 front-end server.  Anyway, the president of the company has purchased a Mac Book Air and wants to use Outlook 2011 to connect to our Exchange server.

My question is, can Outlook 2011 connect to a mailbox that is hosted on an Exchange 2003 server, if it connects through an Exchange 2007 CAS?  If so, what steps beyond the initial installation, do I need to take on the Exchange 2007 server to get this working?

No idea about Mac. Does outlook 2011 give any errors when you try and connect to exchange 2003 on the LAN?

We haven't tried that, since the laptop is remote to the internal network.

Outlook 2011 will support Exchange Server 2007 or later. It will not support Exchange Server 2003 or earlier

Oops I missed the part about having 2007 CAS. That's a good question. I will see if I can find the answer for you. I would say your best bet is to test yourself if possible

I have already tested it, to no avail.  That is why I am asking if this can even be done.  I am wondering if I have to have the mailbox stored on the Exchange 2007 server itself.

i really don't know your dns/mx record workflow and if your  MX record and dns pointed to exchange 2003 it will not  work with outlook 2011.

as  ShareefHuddle mentioned  outlook 2011 it's not compatible with   MS Exchange 2003

rpc pointed on which server and cetificate?

What was the solution in the end from MS?
ShareefHuddle

Yes I would also like to know the end solution. Can you post it please?

I have exactly the same question and would like to install one CAS only server to allow Mac Outlook 2011 to connect to Exchange 2003 mailboxes.  Can you please explain what you had to do to get this to work.  Your explanantion will help countless Windows admins and Mac users.  Thanks.
