No Scanners were detected

Prior to reinstalling Windows 7 (via upgrade) I was able to use the W7 Scan & Fax application.
Now - when I try to scan, I get the above message - No scanners were detected.
However Vuescan has no problems finding the scanner.
And it appears to be OK in Device Manager.
Any advice please?

Did you install a WIA driver for that scanner?

The scanner is an old one  Acer Scanprisa 604UT. It came with Mirascan software - versions 3.40 and 4.03 are on my PC.
The Fax& Scan app currently list two documents which I scanned with it prior to the enforced reinstallation of the o/s, which to my mind indicates that there is a way forward.
To answer your question - I didn't consciously install a WIA driver after the reinstallation.
How can I tell if it's there or not?
Can I install it myself? & how?

I got the same issue. I got an old scanner no WIA driver for it, but Windows 7 requires such one.

I don't know how you were able to scan those documents, but it seems like you need some software that uses the TWAIN interface.

I use http://free.zoner.com/ for that
I tried free.zoner - seems to be a very good package - and free. Unfortunately it can't find my Scanner.
It is clearly looking for Mirascan 3.40, which is installed - but having got to the Mirascan start window, that window reports that it cannot find a scanner.
I have asked them for advice.
VaughanMx--Use Device Manager to try to find new drivers?
try if you can scan from Paint>file>import from scanner
"from scanner or camera" in Paint is greyed out.
then paint does not see it either..    :((

but what do you mean with "Prior to reinstalling Windows 7 (via upgrade) I was able to use the W7 Scan & Fax application"
-was it working ok in W7 ?
-  and what was the reason for reinstall ?
-did you first install the scanner software - then connect it
- and is the model correct?  -->   Scanprisa 604UT ?  unknown on the net !

did you try windows update? it can help, or maybe Drivereasy (free) : http://www.drivereasy.com/
First - my typo - Scanprisa 640UT - made by Acer but now quite old. Sorry for wasting your time on that.

As a result of a power failure some weeks ago I had an o/s which had several problems (eg IE8 wouldn't install recommended updates...). The recommendation was to re install the (win7) o/s. During that process, an option to do a clean install (no applications would survive that) - or an upgrade - is offered. I chose the upgrade. Almost everything except m/s Office survived intact - I had to uninstall / reinstall Office.

Prior to the update, I was able to use the W7 Scan & Fax app OK.

The scanner was not connected during the reinstall of the o/s - but has been connected ever since.

Device Manager correctly identifies the device as Acer Color Flatbed Scanner 640UT. Says "This device is working properly."
Driver Provider: Acer Peripherals inc.
Drive date: Not available
Driver Version:  3.40.2000.1
Driver Signer:  Not digitally signed
After Updating the driver, the above details remain unchanged.

Drivereasy found the scanner driver to be up to date.
first  - tx for the complete response ! it helps
did you try driver update yet?
but it looks like an OS problem to me, you could try a repair install : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

i never do upgrades, because the problems that are there remain, and often adds some more.
post results
I followed up the reference to sevenforums - from which I deduce that it was a repair install that did. I would rather pay to use Vuescan or buy a new scanner than repeat that exercise!

Maybe I just have to decide between those two alternatives. But if Vuescan can do this trick, what am we missing here?
Vuescan is a 3-rd party application, and probably has all drivers included (since it works with all scanners)
From which I deduce that the necessary driver(s) are resident somewhere on my PC - and maybe could be brought into more general use?
yes, if you can locate them
here a tool for that :

That worked - I have scanned a document while in XP Mode.

It will be even better when I have worked out how to access that scanned document from Win 7!
the virtual xp mode is transparent to windows 7, you should be able to use your default folders for saving the document

Another way would be to use the tool dropbox:

http://www.dropbox.com/

You would install dropbox on windows xp and windows 7 and exchange the files via that internet service (fully encrypted 2 GB for free)
Please correct my mistake - nobus should have the 250 points.
Thanks,
Vaughan
I suggest a split #34170825 for suggestion xp mode and #34173014 for suggestion how to exchange files to/ from xpmode
