Windows XP Firewalls, how do I tell what XP thinks is installed?
I have a windows XP workstation, service pack 3, for which the security center tells me a firewall is active. However windows firewall service is disabled. There is no sign of mcafee, norton, keerio, etc... etc... installed on this machine. I simply do not recognize any other firewall.
The only item that I am unfamiliar with that I can even phathom having a firewall is the VZ Access software from verizon. (this seems unlikely, but it's the only other utility that I can see that directly impacts the network).
Anyhow, is there a way to tell what Windows 'thinks' is the firewall I have installed? In security center if you expand the firewall section, it simply says "At least one of the firewalls installed on this computer is currently ON".

I've already looked at all my services, I don't recognize anything as a firewall. In fact I've been able to pinpoint what each and every service is that's running, yet windows still tells me a firewall is active.
Would you please open a cmd prompt and cut and past the following command:
sc query type= service > services.txt

What is the name of your VIPRE Enterprise Software running? Some of their versions include a desktop firewall. (Sunbelt Software Enterprise Service DISPLAY_NAME: VIPRE Enterprise Service)

This is definitely not the firewall/premier version of vipre, antivirus only. I even removed vipre and rebooted just to insure, windows still thinks there is a firewall when vipre has been removed.

I've removed vipre completely in my testing, i.e. those services didn't even exist at one point. I even used sunbelt's vipre removal tool to insure there was nothing left over from that install.

yes, my services.txt says it is running now - but I had previously removed it confirmed it was not at fault. Anyhow, I can't stop the vipre services with it installed now, it won't let you. BUT if I remove it, reboot and the services are gone, then windows still thinks there is a firewall.
Can you run the following command at a command prompt?
C:\>net stop "VIPRE Enterprise Service"
C:\>net stop "VIPRE Enterprise Service"
