How to increase the speed of my videos

On my website I offer large videos to be viewed (1 hour or more). This works, however if one chooses to go fastforward to another time in the video it takes very long before the playing starts again. How can I increase the speed:

1. By letting Amazon S3 host my files?
2. By encoding differently? (flash or other formats, regular streaming or http-streaming)
3. How important is the choice of the player
4. Anything else?

Many thanks

Um the videos can't really be FF to another spot unless the viewer has downloaded them first
so how do you have the web video streamed?
Here's a bit informative info on streaming
Most videos should load and play simultaneously using the streaming video technology.

That was a informative piece, thank you Merete. But it is focussed on the receiving part. I want to know how I can best offer my vids (of 1 hour duration) on a not so busy site. Is it worthwhile to use Cloudfront or similar? Should I opt for http-streaming, pseudostreaming (or is that the same?) or what?

Good :)
One of the keys to fast video streaming is actually in the audio as well.
Depends on the streaming methods you use and the formats you use,
Flash is the most popular, do you have a flash server?
But here's some ideas again that may interest you and hopfully provide some ideas
with CloudLight or cloudfront it's still new to me apologies there with my limitations.

but there is others such  NSV format from Nullsoft these are very small size
if you have ever used Winamp then viewed the media library Shoutcast TV you'll  see.
You can start your own shoutcast streaming service

Well there are some new developments now. I  have my flash videos on the Cloudfront server and I can call them through  rtmp. So I suppose they stream. However something strange happens with the fast fordward skipping option

This file: http://www.groenerekenkamer.nl/nn plays as it should and I can skip to wherever I want.

This file however: http://www.groenerekenkamer.nl/webs makes skipping only possible ion the first half of the movie, if you select a location past halfway, then the player sort of resets itself.

Have I done something wrong while encoding?

Any ideas?

The first link is unavailable to me, the second just loads, may I suggest you ask for more assistance so the mods can add your question to more s=zones and  call in more experts on encoding/ rendering scripting in flash.
In your first question at the bottom right request attention.
