Are you also using the port number when using the alias name?  Did you create a DNS record for your alilas name?  Does that alias resolve to the correct IP address if you do an nslookup?

Are you using an alias with a domain that you own?  If so, you would need to access the Name Server that controls your domain name and create an A record that points to the IP address.  Say for example your sql server was at IP address 123.123.123.123 and your alias is sqlserver.mydomain.com.  You would need to access the Name Servers that controls mydomain.com and add an A record for sqlserver.mydomain.com with an IP address of 123.123.123.123.  The DNS record might look something like this.

sqlserver A 123.123.123.123
