Google Maps - Scale legend

How do you make the "scale" legend appear on a Google Map created with the API?

By "scale" I mean the "lines" annotation in the lower left that shows a mile & a km (or less if at high res).

in v2 of google maps you could use :
map.addControl(new GScaleControl());

in the newer one:
