When I try to update to Service Pack 3, I get an error

Every time I try to install Service Pack 3 I get the following error from the microsoft update:

"A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed"

This error is like saying the engine light on your car, to me it just says "PROBLEM" and there is no solution to fix it. Any ideas?

What kind of computer and CPU?  HP had a problem with their AMD machines not installing SP3 without an update.

Instead of using Windows Updates try downloading it from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4

Even though it says it isn't for one computer.

What service pack do you have now 2?

If it is SP 1, then you need to do 1a first.

I have service pack 2, additionally when I try to install SP3 via just the download and not the automatic, I get this error:

Service Pack 3 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 3, or vice versa

.... strange.

Go to this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

Download and install Windows Installer 3.1

It will clean out your old history and re-register the dll's necessary for installations to work. Then go back to Windows Update and try again.

I'm presuming you are trying to download SP3 from Windows Update.

Download this SP3 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en&pf=true

and see if it installs.

I do try to download it from Windows Update and I get that error.... when I try to download it and install from a straight download... during the install it gives me the error I noted about, how it says something about checking something or vice versa.

"Service Pack 3 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 3, or vice versa"

I am beginning to think there is something more wrong then I once imagined.

IT, Stop Being Called Into Every Meeting

If I can just get on a WPA2 network with SP2, that would be a great alternative.

Try the download link I supplied just above.  It looks like for some reason you are running the developers version of Windows XP.

If that does not work try this....

Open regedit and goto: (Start>Run>regedit) navigate to....
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

In right-side pane look for a String value "CurrentType". Change its value to Checked and if its already set to Checked, then set it to Free and click on OK.

Exit registry editor and try to install SP3 again. Now it should install without any problem.

You cannot install vista sp3 on top of windows xp.
To verify your version right click my computer then properties, what do you see there windows version?
If in fact you have xp you will need to first upgrade to vista then install each service pack starting with sp1 and so on....

Wow, after all this I realize I did something wrong. The Windows Update was not working, still can't get it to work. But I installed the wrong version of SP3, the wrong one being the developer apparently.

It works now that I uninstalled and reinstalled with the standard SP3 version.

Thank you all.
