Man, who would have thought migrating 300K files from one server to another would be such a nightmare?

I am migrating my primary file server from an older Windows 2003 x86 server to Windows 2008 x64.  I have a very deep and complicated folder structure with about 300K files and 200+GB.  During my tests one folder structures that are well under 254 characters and are mostly small Office and PDF files, I have tried to use Robocopy, Secure Copy and RichCopy.  All three have failed.  RichCopy can't even copy a single file.  It tells me it can't find the path speicifed, although I can manually access and copy files no problem.

Robocopy and Secure Copy (The Demo ver from Scriptlogic) start off ok copying files, but each one hangs part way through.  I can't kill the process and I have to reboot the server to get rid of it.  Happens on random files, not ones that are too deep.  Small ones too.  less than a meg.

Has anyone experienced problems like this With Windows 2008?  Or could it be a problem with my Dell Poweredge R710?  The server seems to work fine otherwise.

I should also mention that when this happens, the server usually hangs during reboot and I have to do a hard reboot.

If your path is too long it will do this.  You can avoid that by sharing a folder deep in the path and copy to the same folder share on the other server.
for example:
Path server\shared\folder one \anotherfolder\here is wher the copy get hung folder\other folder follows
Share anotherfolder\here is wher the copy get hung folder so your new path will be
server\anotherfolder\here is wher the copy get hung folder\other folder follows
do the same on the destination server and copy away.

try teracopy. it is best used for large files but I have had times when xxcopy would hang but teracopy would sludge through. you could try xxcopy as well since you didn't list it. also, any idea if it's a specific file or folder that is causing the hang? if so, remove that if possible and copy the rest.

Turns out the problem required me to turn off RSS and TCP chimney settings on the target server.
