Thanks gheist, I had tried copying across the inf folder from an xppro box, what worked for me was also copying the system32/drivers folder across and adding any not already extant .sys files and also replacing any that referred to HID or USB, sheesh a was going around on circles with that one for an age, cheers

Hi I am trying to install a scanner on XP embedded, the add new <br />
hardware wizard identifies it as unknown device and refuses to allow <br />
me to update the driver using hidclass.sys, hidparse.sys, hidusb.sys <br />
files imported from an xp pro system. <br />
This version of XPE has no service packs installed, i am an XPE <br />
newbie, is it possible to install SP's on XPE? Would it make a <br />
difference? <br />
