I installed and ran XP SP3 on a Dell laptop that had only XP SP2 installed -  It went thru the entire upgrade process but hung at the last stage “Finishing Installation”, Performing Cleanup.

Its over ¾ completed with the hard drive activity going full throttle but the progress bar would not move past 85%. The system is not hung becase I can still move the mouse and open other windows. Its been at this statge for over an hour

I thought about restarting the laptop. I know in the past when an installation fails, it takes quite some time to toally back out back SP2. Should I jsut restart the system? It seems waiting will jsut overheat the hard drive. Its crunching like crazy.

Any thoughts

That's happened to me a thousand times with XP SP3 upgrades from an XP SP2 install. After about 30 minutes or so I reboot the machine and when it comes back up everything is fine with SP3 being installed.

Personally I would just restart the laptop. We have had quite a few of these here at work and I've never seen an issue rebooting the laptop after say 30 minutes or so when stuck at that progress.

I ended up rebooting and - while the laptop tried to shut down, a pop-up box came up immediatley and said "installation was successful". the laptop rebooted fine and came up fine with SP3 installed
