Need help using webservices to update a datalist in VB.net  3.5

I'm a newbie to asp.net...  I'm using web services to send values into my code behind and I know how to replace an id using that...   So I can pass a value from JavaScript to the code behind and then use the JavaScript to display a different value.   But, I actually need to be able to replace a data-list on my page...  Is that possible?  In PHP I would usually pass that table of data from a function using Ajax...  But,  I'm being told I need to use a data-list for this project...   Can I put an entire data-list (from the aspx code) into a vb call in the code-behind and then call that function on page load and from  my web-services calls?  Or does that make sense?   I could've done this in an hour in PHP...

Please help!  Thanks!

I think your best option is to use the built-in microsoft ajax control called the UpdatePanel. This will pass everything you need back and forth. the only other "easy" way would be to not use the datalist and create the display HTML manually and modify that through javascrtipt. Since you have to use the datalist, you obviously can't use that approach.

I was told that I couldn't use an update panel because the values will be dynamic based on the date a user selects...  So how can I use an update panel to accomplish this with a datalist...  My datalist is an array at this point...  But, if the user selects a new date, I would need to be able to change the whole datalist values...

So there is no way to create a datalist and place it in a string or object in the codebehind?
