Reliability of Joomla DocMan statistics

I have a Joomla website and I chanced upon the Docman statistics on downloads. It appears that one of my files was downloaded 800 times. Since I have not heard anything more than from perhaps 20 people who downloaded that file, I am suspicious of those download statistics.

So we get to the question: How reliable are Joomla statistics?

Many thanks.

If a person downloads a file why would they need/want to contact you?

What I mean is that If I downloaded a file that showed me how to use Conditional formatting in Excel, ... and it worked... why would I need to contact the author?

Perhaps 800 people downloaded the file, but only 20 people wanted to contact you (or had the time to, ...or didn't know how, ...or didn't care, ...or forgot...etc)
;-)

As far as the reliability of Joomla stats, ... since you are a customer, my feeling would be that your best bet would be to contact them directly...

They would want to contact me as the tool is on a 30-day trial. I can't believe it is so bad no-one bothered. (I have sold 300-odd of the things directly.)

If no-one else gives me an insight, I will talk to Joomla.

Whenever I buy/download anything I never bother ...

Just no time.

Besides, it just generates more emails to read, for no real benefit.

I mean if I but a TV from Amazon, and it works fine, why bother contacting them?
(Unless there is some benefit to me)

When you buy a sweater from a store and it fits and looks great, ...do you write them a letter?

Forgive me for pointing out what I thought was obvious: The downloaded app would only run for 30 days. They HAD to contact me to keep using it. I know it is OK so why did no-one?

I still suspect Joomla stats...

I will try to get through to Joonla tomorrow.

Thanks,

peter

<The downloaded app would only run for 30 days. They HAD to contact me to keep using it.>

Again, I have downloaded Hundreds of time limited Demo files from various sites and I have never contacted the author.
I don't know anything about your file, ...but most are not worth anything beyond the trial period...

Can you post the link to this file, and I'll tell you what I think...

boaq2000, I'll try Joomla and let you know what they say...

The download lives at http://www.counselog.co.uk/download_counselog.html, the first item. I will be very interested to hear from you...

When I click the "Download" button for the file, I get this message on the top of the page:
"The document is being edited/updated by an user and is unavailable at this moment."

This may mean that the Downloads are being "Counted" when a person clicks the Download button, but the file is not actually being downloaded.
Hence, people don't contact you because they could not DL the file...

I was finally able to DL the file.

Here is my brutally honest evaluational...

1. Your file is over 200 MB.
Large enough for me not even want to download it.

2. The file is a Zip file.
This means that the person downloading it cannot run the set up exectuable file from within the archive.
(They will get an error message if they try)
Again, a lot of people just don't want to be bothered with this.
They want a file the can download and test immediately.
The contents of the zip file must be extracted "Manually" to a folder.
(You provide no utility to do this automatically, so unless the user is smart enough, they may just give up)

3. Your install program may ask to over-write "CompatUI.dll. and scrrun.dll
Again, a scary prospect for many users as they will suspect that your program is trying to install spyware.

4. Your program will further run a "Start-up program...
Again, *Too Much Trouble*

5. Then it asked me for my "Profile", ....*Too Much Trouble*

6. Then it was not clear how to close this application, once it was opened.
The main close button in the upper right corner did not work.

7. Too many Childish "amateurish" annoying Sounds.

8. Application was confusing to even figure out what it could be used for, let alone figure out how to use it if you did not know what the program was supposed to be doing in the first place.

9. Your app installs the Access 2002 runtime (an 8 year old version) at a time when over 75% of MS Access users are using versions 2003 or higher.
If you go through the posts here, you will see dozens of issue where a runtime is installed that is a different version of what version of Office a user already has installed.

10. Your application provide no "Uninstall" program.

11. The UI is a bit "Childish" looking. (To many colors, overly large text, fancy fonts, shadowed textboxes ...etc)

If you want my opinion, just post an MDE file with limited functionality.
At least people can download the file and test it.

The way you have it now, it is, ... you guessed it:...
*Too Much Trouble*

;-)

Thanks, I think...

I'll get back to you in detail tomorrow. Some useful comments but many things you mention are sorted in Cg 4.27.

Then we can close this question.

"Thanks, I think..."
Hey, I told you I would be honest...
;-)

But again, I have never contacted a site after I downloaded a demo, (whether I liked it or not) and I have downloaded hundreds.

Although reasons were given why the Jooomla download stats were probably accurate, there was no hard evidence for or against their accuracy. I am now trying to get answers on this particular point out of Joomla.
