Windows 7 Printer Spooler Service doesn't start or stops?

Windows 7 64 Bit: What are the likely causes of the Print Spooler either not starting or stopping? It's set to automatically start but I'm getting print errors and when checking in devices my resident printers disappear which is being caused by the spooler 'crashing' I recently installed an HP 1020 Laserjet and used it's CD even though I guess there was a driver resident in Windows...would it be wise to hard uninstall it and try adding it again using a driver downloaded from HP?

Followed my own advice...uninstalled the HP 1020 completely & then found a new driver for 64 bit systems on the HP support site (This version was only released about ten days ago...) and fingers crossed all seems to have come right. Perhaps there was a compatibility issue with the earlier driver.
Phew...now I can get back to work.
