Exchange 2010 EWS problem - Out of Office (outlook 2007) not working (server not available) - Also MAC Entourage no longer connecting.

Until recently, Out of office was working fine on our Exchange 2010 server. Since it has stopped, I have tried several things to get it working. Nothing so far has worked.

I can see the EWS in adsi edit.
I have tried various security settings in IIS.
I have used the Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory in command shell. ( I think this is when Entourage went offiline. Entourage connects to exchange using the https://server.domain.com/ews/exchange.asmx in it's settings.)
I've checked DNS. All OK.
I ran dcdiag and all was clear (except NCSecDesc failed but I don't plan on having any read only domain controllers so it doesn't matter).

I'm not really sure where else to look.

I am prepared to run through this from the top since it is possible I have missed something.

Any thoughts on how to get the EWS service working properly would be greatly appreciated.

Note: Although running Exchange 2010 - we do not have Service Pack 1 installed yet. When we tried installing the pre-requisite hotfixes, we lost the abaility to log into the server. Had to remove them which therefore prevents us installing SP1.

This is fairly urgent for me to get working in the next day or two.  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds certificate & autodiscover related.

What happens if you run Test-OutlookWebServices -Identity:user@yourdomain.com for one of the affected users?

Suggest there is a DNS issue contacting the mail. domain.

Yes.
myserver.mydomain.com is as it suggests.

mail.contoso.com i think is a default microsoft entry.
It is not our domain. I have never entered any information regarding this server/domain.

Is it easy to remove it. If this is what blocking my own domain from repsonding then it may be an easy fix.

From what I can see, the EWS URL is actually redirecting - possbily, looking at the next message to a login page of some kind.

What happens if you try to browse to it?

Had a thought - your users aren't going through a proxy server are they?

If so, I'd set an exception to this address.

If I use Internet Explorer to browse to:
https://myserver.mydomain.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx

First I get the "There is a problem with this sites certificate" error.

I click "Continue to website (Not recommended)"

Then I get:
Server Error in '/EWS' Application.

The resource cannot be found.
Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.  Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.

No proxy server.
All on the LAN at present.

Ok - that suggests two things.

One - the certificate is wrong as per my original answer. We can get to that later.

Two - something has moved / deleted / changed the EWS folder on the server.

This could have been the failed update.

Follow these:

To remove EWS: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124231.aspx
To re-create EWS: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125176.aspx

Once that bit is working you will need to look into your certificate.

OK, I can try to recreate the EWS after the users leave. Should only be another hour or so.

With regards to the certificate, I think it's only giving that error because it's self signed and not from a trusted CA.
But , as you say, we can look at that if reinstalling EWS works.

Are you likely to be around to answer more questions later this evening?
Hopefully it'll only be a coulpe of hours before I know the outcome.

Hi Simon - self signed certs cause all sorts of issues so much better to get hold of a public CA UC/SAN (Unified Communications / Subject Alternative Name [same thing, different names]) from the likes of GoDaddy or certificatesforexchange.com

(Just made that bot unreadable - dot = . of course and remove the whole <NOSPAM> bit.

I will have access to mails on my phone. :-)

The mail.contoso.com is still there, thought that would be gone.

Not sure I am any further forward with this than before I reinstalled the EWS.

I have found that since recreating the EWS, I can no longer connect to the excahnge management shell or the exhange management console.

I get:
VERBOSE: Connecting to myserver.mydomain.com
[myserver.mydomain.com] Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client sent a request to an HTTP server and got a response saying the requested HTTP URL was not available. This is usually returned by a HTTP server that does not support the WS-Management protocol. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.

I have tried reinstalling the WinRM IIS Extensions but this has not changed anything.

Due to lack of response, I had to call Microsoft and log a call with them.

Here is what we did:
=We deleted the Autodiscover,EWS,ECP,OAB
=And we recreated the virtual directories
=And we followed the KB 940726
=And we ran the following
Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity MyServer -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri https://MyServer/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -Identity "MyServer\EWS (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https:/MyServer/ews/exchange.asmx
Set-OABVirtualDirectory -Identity "MyServer\oab (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://MyServer/oab
=Checked and found EWS directory had Forms based authentication enabled.
=Disabled Forms based authentication on EWS in IIS.
=Did IIS reset
=And found that we are able to set OOF now
