Cannot install HP LaserJet 8150 printer

I am trying to install an HP LaserJet 8150 printer with the PCL 5e driver on a Win XP machine.  At the end of the printer configuration it gives me this message: "Unable to install printer.  Operation could not be completed."  I have tried to delete the printer driver by going to File, Server Properties, but it would not let me stating that the driver was in use.  I checked the printers already installed on the machine and there were none of them using the driver.  I even removed the printer driver in the registry.  I have read many threads on this and this seems to be a common problem among HP drivers.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can install the printer?

We use HP laser printers, including this one, exclusively at my company and really don't run into issues like this.  Is this printer local to the PC, a remote printer being accessed over the LAN or through a print server?'

How are you trying to install the drivers?

This is a printer connected on the LAN by way of ethernet cable.  I am installing it as a local printer and pointing the port to the correct IP address.  I have even gone as far as deleting the IP port and re-adding it but that is not fixing my problem.

Are you selecting Standard TCP/IP port?

Do you have the ability to hook the printer directly to the PC via USB? Sometimes if there are issues doing this across the network, hooking via USB will work.  If that's not an option try and tell it that the printer is on LPT1:, even though there is nothing there.  That might also allow the drivers to load. Once loaded, you could then set up new LAN printer on the PC and just use the already installed drivers.

Right off the top I don't see anything you're doing wrong and I'd probably do the exact same thing you are doing.  I assume that you are attempting to install an XP driver?  Didn't accidentally pick up a Vista or Windows 2000 driver?

I do not have the ability to install the printer by way of USB due to the location of the machine.  I double-checked the printer version and it is for XP.  I have used the same printer install with the same driver on all the other machines in the department with no problem.  I will try the LPT1 option to see if that helps.

Yeah it ought to work.  The nice thing about using LPT1 is that it should install even with out the printer being connected to the PC.  Does this PC have the same service pack level as the others?  SP shouldn't make a difference, but if the other have SP3 and this one only has SP2, installing SP3 might update some corrupted file.

it has XP SP2 on it when I first encountered the problem but I upgraded the machine to SP3 but still no luck.

I tried the method of installing the printer using the LPT1 port but no luck there.  It gave the same message of "Unable to install printer.  Operation could not be completed."

Any other ideas?

I was able to fix the problem.  I went to File, Server Properties and then instead of trying to remove the driver, I chose the option to replace the driver.  It then prompted me that it was looking for a file that could not be found.  I pointed it in the right direction and it replaced the driver.  I then tried to apply that driver to the printer install and it finally worked!
