Configuring a schedule for a job in spoon (pentaho data integration)

I've developed a job in spoon and I tried scheduling it by going into the settings of the "START" action, but the job doesn't fire. Do I need to set up a repository or does ktichen need to be running to get scheduling to work?

Confusion on my part... I thought clicking on the run button in the gui would always immediately run the job but it turns out you do the same thing when the job is scheduled.
