When i run or debug my flex 4 app it opens in the browser using https
how do i get it to use https?

This seems problem with your build path and output folder path, you might have mentioned https in output folder url.

Verify the following:
1. Go to "Properties" from Project menu, it will open properties window
2. Select "Flex Build Path" from left side list
3. Now on the right hand side, verify following field:
- "Output folder URL" - Make sure you have specified http here. for example this field look like: "http://localhost/Project/bin-debug/"
