emails to users in a specific OU gettting stuck in local queue

Hi Experts!

I'm getting an odd issue whereby emails coming in to accounts contained in a specific Active Directory OU are getting stuck in the Exchange local delivery queue. Other emails addresses to accounts in a different OU are going through absolutely fine.

Outlook web access works correctly for all users, and no issues are reported with Outlook connecting to the mailboxes.

We did have an issue last week with this particular server overheating and shutting down, this has been repaired but I needed to run a repair on the exchange databases last week using eseutil. It's been doing this ever since. Can anyone cast light on what the issue may be? I'm thinking it's something to do with this particular OU, as everything else appears to be working correctly. Incidentally I've restarted all the exchange services and the IIS Admin service, and rebooted the server, still no joy. Help! Extremely urgent so 500 points up for grabs.

Thanks - Sam -

from your exchange server

start  > run > cmd
eventvwr

Check under application logs.

Are there any Event ID 326
Or any other relevant Event ID's pertaining to mails not getting delivered.

Please post back.

thanks

I guess you have not run isinteg on the database after running eseutil /p ?

Since this is happening for only one user then it might be possible their is corruption in the mailbox.

First try this steps to rename the SMTP queue ,Stop the SMTP service and then Remane the mailroot folder. Then restart the SMTP and then do the test for one user & check the Event ID in application log.

If you are getting Event Id 327 then this is pointing to Database Corruption

To resolve database corruption issue Run isinteg command 3 time on the database and If any third party is installed on the server thern uninstalled it for troubleshooting.

Command for ISINTEG

X:\Program Files\exchsrvr\BIN>isinteg -s (ServerName) -fix -test alltests

It will fix the issue

Hope this helps.

What happens if you move the user to another OU? I doubt it will work because I think it is DBcorruption like viralrathod says... Time to isinteg.

When you repair an Exchange Database, the recommended way to do this is to run:

eseutil /p (to repair the database) followed by

eseutil /d (to defragment the database) followed by

isinteg -s servername -fix -test alltests (run as many times as it takes until you see 0 errors and 0 fixes in the last line of output).

Then and only then can you be happy that your database is in a happy state.

Most delays to emails destined for local mailboxes can be attributed to database issues which the above will resolve.

Hi all! Thanks for your responses.

I did run isinteg -s servername -fix -test alltests after I repaired the exchange database, it initially found errors but as suggested I repeated until there were none. Just tried it again, it's not reporting any errors.

I've also tried moving the user into an OU containing users that do work, no luck there either, my test messages still get stuck, so I guess it's not OU related. It just seemed odd that all the users with this issue (there are 4) are in this OU, and all the working ones are in a different one.

I'm also not seeing anything in the event logs with ID 326 or 327. Any more ideas? I ran the Exchange troubleshooting tool and increased logging on the MSExchangeTransport  service, nothing shown in even viewer. Any other suggestions? I'm a bit stuck....

Have you installed and run the Exchange 2003 Best Practises Analyzer and followed it's recommendations?

I've now run the best practise anaylser, which flagged up 2 issues. One was an expired SSL certificate which has now been resolved, the other was to do with the pages file being set too high, which has also now been resolved. Still getting the same issue though.

I ran the Exchange troubleshooting assistant, which flagged up a mail acceptance failure message. Following the troubleshooting guidelines here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/aa997641%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx I increased logging on the Exchange Store Driver, and got event ID 327. There's a hotfix for this, but it's only for SP1, and my system is on SP2. What next? Is it worth trying to recreate the users mailbox?

Further research still points to DB corruption. I'm going to try and run the defrag / isinteg -s ServerName -fix -test alltests again, I'll post the results back asap.

Yep - as per the following comment in my first post:

>> Most delays to emails destined for local mailboxes can be attributed to database issues which the above will resolve. <<

This sounds to me like a database issue.

Ok, same issue, emails to other users are going through fine after defrag and repair, but still the same issue with these few users mailbexes. If its any more help, the exact error text in the 327 error is: The following call : EcLocallyDeliverMsg to the store failed. Error code : -1605.

I enabled some more logging, and I've noticed I'm also getting the following:

Error 9175, MSExchangeSA,
The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed.
The MAPI provider failed.
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store

Any chance it could be related? Cheers all.

Interesting.

Can you give me some system information please:

Is this Exchange 2003 Enterprise or Standard?

What size is the store that the mail is not flowing into? (.edb & .stm files).

Are there any other ESE / MSExchangeSA / MSExchangeIS errors in the Application Event Log?

Server 2003 R2 Standard, SP2
Exchange v 6.5 (Build 7638.2 - Service Pack 2).
Single server, also a DC. Only server in this organisation (it's a small business, but not SBS server).

Priv1 is about 6GB,
Pub1 is 15MB.

So tiny on the grand scale of things. Those are the only databases.

I'm also getting a load of ActiveSync 3005 errors, although those were there before the problem with the local delivery started, and active sync seems to work correctly. Aside from the errors listed above, I've filtered the event logs, here are the other errors I've discovered:

Event Type:      Error

This one particularly concerns me:

Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      MSExchangeAL
Event Category:      Service Control
Event ID:      8250
Date:            22/11/2010
Time:            11:02:38

Description:
The Win32 API call 'DsGetDCNameW' returned error code [0x862] The specified component could not be found in the configuration information.  The service could not be initialized.  Make sure that the operating system was installed properly.

That last one sounds a bit worrying! But as mentioned, everything else is working, and I haven't seen anything other than the 3005 activesync and 9175 MAPI errors in 2 days, so I'd written those off as generated during reboots / repairs.

sounds like you have some AD and/or DNS issues.

Can you post the results of DCDIAG and NETDIAG.

Can you also check that the permissions as detailed in my article here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_2829-Exchange-2007-Topology-discovery-failed.html

Demazter, just ran through your article and the permissions are all in order.

I'm going to try recreating the users mailbox next, I'm interested to see if that will solve it.

Another update: I tried running exmerge on the users mailbox but it failed with the following error:
Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on.
I'm running it as the administrator account. The odd thing is I can send emails from this account via OWA. Checking for new mail doesn't do anything.

I tried deleting the users mailbox from AD, then going to ESM Mailboxes, running the cleanup wizard and reconnecting, but that didn't work, so unless I can get Exmerge to work, I'm clean out of options. Anyone have any more ideas?

Running EXMERGE with the Administrator account won't work.  You will be specifically denied the permissions you need.  Please read Demazter's article on EXMERGE:

sounds like the mailbox is missing permissions.
is there a specific deny permission listed under the security tab for that user?

Howdy all.

Well, I fixed the issue, by adding a new user, renaming the old one, and using Outlook to export from the old mailbox and import into the new one. Mail is now flowing again. Thanks to all for the help, points are being divided equally. Thanks!

Issue was fixed in a way that was not discussed in the original thread, but the experts were extremely helpful.
