Hi everybody!

I have a cisco 3620 Router, since i bought it there was no IOS installed so i'm trying to figure out how to get it working..

The router is configured as follow.

System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
oC3600 processor with 65536 Kbytes of main memory
Main memory is configured to 32 bit mode with parity disabled

device does not contain a valid magic number
boot: cannot open "flash:"
boot: cannot determine first file name on device "flash:"

rommon 1 >

And this is the result of meminfo:

Main memory size: 64 MB in 32 bit mode.
Available main memory starts at 0xa000e000, size 65480KB
IO (packet) memory size: 25 percent of main memory.
IO memory is configured by user
NVRAM size: 32KB

Now the story:

I tried installing this immage: c3620-ik2s-mz.121-27b.bin, trougt xmodem -cyr, after 4 hours it rebooted and loaded the IOS but it was password protected!

I decided to reboot and press ctrl+breck to password recovery but i had an error message:

oPC = 0xbfc0a024, Cause = 0x2000, Status Reg = 0x3041f003

And then the boot stopped.

At the next sitch on/off it was like before the upload of IOS,.

It could be that the image you have obtained is corrupted.  A method you should use prior to X-Modem is the TFTP Download.  Try the following and see if this corrects your issue:

Connect your router and PC to a switch.  The PC should be running a TFTP program that can support image sizes greater than 32MB.  I have provided a link for a good TFTP server.

http://tftpd32.jounin.net/

1) Once you have the TFTP server on your PC installed and running, give your TCP/IP stack an IP address of 192.168.1.1.

2) At ROMMON mode on the Cisco router, enter the following commands exactly as shown below:

set
IP_ADDRESS=192.168.1.10
IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.255.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY=192.168.1.100
TFTP_SERVER=192.168.1.1
TFTP_FILE=c3620-ik2s-mz.121-27b.bin
TFTP_RETRY_COUNT=20

tftpdnld

Let me know if this fixes your issue.

hi,
thanks for reply,
the router doesn't have any native ethernet interface.. actually it doesn't have any..
ofcourse i have an expansion card with ethernet bu i'm not sure if it is gonna see it in rommon, i'll give a try!
for the tftp serve i allready have exactly that version installed on my server so i'll give a try.

Can you allso advise me where to find the correct ios for the system? just remember that i have no budget since i'm a private CCNa student...
thank in advance!!

I have had a similar issue with a 2500 series router with no FastEthernet interfaces.  What I had to do was take the flash from the corrupted router (in your case 3620) and put it into another router that supported the same type of flash.  Once I did that, I was able to successfully load the image onto the device.  After that, I put the Flash back into the corrupted router and it worked like new.

Try doing a dir in ROMMON and see if anything is listed.  If you see an IOS listed, try the command boot flash:

To access the router since trying to change the baud rate to 115200, what you will need to do is try all the various baud rates until you can get a response from the device.  Once you have a response, enter confreg and go through the various options and select option 0 for 9600 baud rate.

The boot loop is probably a hardware error.  If you have added any WICs or other hardware to the router, remove them and attempt to boot.  If you can successfully boot, then take each hardware removed an add them to the device one item at a time to find the broken one.  If is not a hardware issue, then the image you are trying to load is too large for the memory.  You will need to complete a TFTPDNLD or X-MODEM to upload a new IOS image.

thanks all.. got access to the router and installed an ios, now i'll wait the 23,3 gb of ios monster collection 2008 to finish and try update to latest version.
with that transfer speed i can do many attempt waiting just 30 min instead of 4 hours!

do you know where to find 12.3 (26) for the 3620? wich version do you advise me for a ccna-ccnp home lab?

I would go with one of the following releases:

c3620-is-mz.123-26.bin (IP Plus)

c3620-ik9o3s6-mz.123-26.bin (IP/FW/IDS PLUS IPSEC 3DES BASIC)

You can download the software from the Cisco Software Download Center if you have a valid CCO account.  If you do not have an account, I am sure that you can do a Google search for either of the IOS listed above.
