We were looking at cost effective ways to host a terminal server in the cloud (we are in the UK) , Amazon looks like the best bet at the moment however we are now considering Citrix XenApp, theres only one LOB application that relies on a SQL DB that needs to be delivered to the users.<br />

I've not used Citrix or other similar solutions so was hoping to get opinions on the best value solution to go for, I think VMware do similar software.<br />

Citrix XenApp vs ... ?

Citrix is the synonym for the virtualization and application infrastructure systems developed by the company of the same name. Main areas are application virtualization, Software-As-A-Service (SaaS), cloud-computing and networking. The two most well-known are Citrix XenApp or Citrix CloudPlatform.

Citrix

VMware, a software company founded in 1998,  was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies.

VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture.  Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.
