Dreamweaver error on startup

Have a client with Win XP sp3 pc that i just installed Dreamweaver CS5 on.  When it starts up, I get an error that "Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 has encountered a problem and needs to close."  In the App Event Log Event ID 1000 Faulting Application Dreamweaver.exe faulting module updatenotifications.dll. I need to resolve this ASAP.  Adobe support was useless. i've uninstalled and reinstalled it with no better result.

Hi 071171,

Was DW ever able to start or did it crash from the moment you tried to run it?

I think it might have open the first time without crashing, but every time after that it has crashed.  Hard to remember since it's been uninstalled and reinstalled at least twice.

Try another uninstall, but before you reinstall download and run this:

http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs5clean.html

It helps to clear out registry entries and other things.

Jason1178 - Tried the Adobe cleaner and then rebooted and reinstalled but didn't work.  Still got the error as soon as I tried to open Dreamweaver the first time after reinstall.

Okay, two more things to try.

1) Try creating a new user in Windows and see if DW can run under that user

2) Patch DW:  http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html#dwcs5

Tried both ideas, but neither made a difference.  Now, when I try to execute it, it doen't even open all the way.  All I see is dreamweaver.exe briefly shows up in Task Mgr and then disappears.

Wow.

Okay, try following the instructions here:

Thx, Jason1178.  No luck with resetting the configuration, though.

:(

Not sure what else to tell you.  What other programs or services are running/

I guess most prominantly are some of the Adobe CS4 (not Dreamweaver). I've also turned off the antivirus just to see if the program scanning was doing anything, and I also tried Safe Mode but neither did anything for me.  I'm at the point where i am going to have to redo the pc to get this software to work.

So you have some CS4 programs installed?

Any chance you uninstalling those, running CS4Clean, then installing CS5?  Or is that too much of a PITA to contemplate?

071171Author Commented:
No - just have to locate the original software for those programs first.  Redoing the pc is last resort.  Will advise once done.

Okay.  Just for kicks and giggles, can you install DW CS5 on a different machine and see if it will run there?  As long as you don't activate it, you will not lose the ability to install it later.

It was already registered on this machine. I assume that is the same as activating it?

Possibly.  You get two activations per copy in any event...

If it is still working fine, catalog the software between the two machines?  See if the bad one is running something the good one isn't?
