When I try to turn on the Managed Metadata Service in central admin, I don't see an option here  http://mycentraladmin:5555/_admin/ServiceApplications.aspx

I just see

Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service Application

Security Token Service Application

Do you have an Entrprise version of SharePoint 2010?

Are you looking under "New", or are you just looking on the page for the MetaData Service?

I believe that I have the enterprise version.  It is  a dev box and I am 90% sure that is what I have.  Is there any way to check?

New is not enabled.

I have see the service list many times and it is usually very long.  This one only has two lines in it.
