I can't apply layout to current slide

I'm in a slide in a presentation with several layouts.  I want to apply one particular layout to this slide but when I choose it, nothing happens.
I tried a layout from a master insde of my presentation and it too doesn't seem to get applied to this particular slide.

What can I do?

Try creating a blank slide and apply the layout you would need. Then copy paste the data from the previous slide to the current new one created.

I'm trying to solve the mystery of WHY the layout is not being accepted by an existing slide.

If the slide in question didn't use placeholders and instead used all manual textboxes, then applying the layout won't necessarily do anything.

What does hitting the Reset button with that slide selected do?

Reset reapplies the placeholders and their formatting. It essentially reapplies the slide layout.

If you've used manual textboxes, then they're not tied to those placeholders.

Sounds to me like you're applying a layout that has no placeholders on it. Otherwise you'd see empty placeholders that say "click to add text" when you click the Reset button.
