Hi Experts,

Is there a built-in search functionality for a SharePoint List?  I have a SharePoint List with several thousand records.  Is there a way to search through a SharePoint list to navigate to the desired record as opposed to having to page through several pages?

thank you

What version of SharePoint?  Have you set up and completed a crawl of your site?

What version of sharepoint are you using (WSS3, MOSS2007, Sharepoint 2010 etc)?

I would have thought that the standard sharepoint search would have met your needs (assuming that you have it configured).

You can also filter the list on certain fields - see http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/MS-SharePoint/Q_26183398.html for some more information on how this has worked for someone else.

Hope this helps...

you could use a filter on the list.  one way to do this is with Data View web part.
DVWP (look at the stuff on how to add a DVWP to your page): http://blog.pathtosharepoint.com/2008/08/24/your-first-data-view-web-part/

filter DVWP (just ignore the stuff about tabs unless you want those.  the stuff on how to filter using DVWP is what you want):
http://www.endusersharepoint.com/2010/08/24/sharepoint-extending-the-dvwp-%E2%80%93-part-30-using-easytabs-with-filtered-dvwps-to-make-data-manageable/

or use a filter web part:

oh.. and i remembered one more resource:
http://philwicklund.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=7379e84f-d131-4c1b-903e-4b12849edf5b&ID=83&Web=8de7cf99-762e-4745-b902-b821d850c07f

i used that blog to create a "search box" that allowed the user to enter in a keyword, and search (using wildcards).

here is my experience:

All,

thank you soooo much for the links.  It will take me a little while to go through these especially since the place that I am working at decided to block many of the suggested sites.  Will have to wait until I get home.  Being a SharePoint newbie, I have to read up a little more on the DVWP but sounds exciting.
