Wordpress: change categories to sub-cats without changing url structure?

I have categories with urls like:

http://www.mysite.com/category/world

I want to change some of the top level categories into sub-categories... but keep the urls the same. So even if 'world' is changed to a subdir, the url stays the same for legacy reasons.

If I just move it to a sub-dir in the admin, it automatically changes the url to http://www.mysite.com/category/topCatName/world

My posts do not use category names in the url, they are just set through permalinks to show mysite.com/postTitle

Is there a way to make these subdirs without the url changing?

opps, meant this to be in the wordpress section only, php jumped in there by accident somehow.
Thanks,  Chris

You'll have to take all4artz advice on the htaccess rewrite.

Wordpress will force that sub-cat name simply to avoid duplicate posts. This article might make it a little quicker for you though. If you're like me, I'm terrible with htaccess code :)
