Windows 2008 R2
Suddenly when I double click on the right pane in explorer it opens a new explorer window...

What I have tried:
* Doublechecked folder options for the "open each folder in own window", set it, unset it etc
* Typed regsvr32 actxprxy.dll in cmd
* Uninstalled internet explorer 8

I imported that regfile although one of the keys does not exist : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore  (policies missing)

It did not work despite restart.

Sounds like maybe the default option got set to Open instead of "none". If you right-click a folder in the pane, which option is boldfaced?

Open regedit and browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
(Default) should be say "none"

Or to save in a .reg file.....
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell]
@="none"

Due to the way Windows treates a folder differently when in Explorer vs. simply double-clicking a folder on your desktop, this should be "None". Having it set to Explore would force double-clicking a folder on the desktop to be in an explorer window with folders, and to Open would cause the issue you mention in Explorer

Option boldfaced is "Open"

shell has default option set to (value not set), will setting this to "none" do anything?

Another thing is that if I log in as another user, the folder opening works correctly

Ah yes, when i press the boldfaced "open" it does not open it in a new explorer window, but in the current. So something about doubleclicking it triggers the erroneous action.

Might have to check in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes for a Folder key then. Normally there isn't one, but since it's working fine for other users......

No, there is no such key there.

However I must correct myself : logging in another user does not fix this problem, it also opens a new explorer window. I just didnt see the stacking on the taskbar.

I have attached the current registry entries from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder
Maybe there's something else there thats wrong.

Strange. You don't have BrowserFlags and ExplorerFlags in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore or in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open.
There is no (Default) in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\explore\command which should be "%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /separate,/e,/idlist,%I,%L"  (@=hex numbers  in a .reg file)

For comparison...

That is from a Vista machine however. I'll RDP into a 2008 server after lunch and post its Folder section.

Well, apparently Microsoft did make some changes with the Folder registry from Vista to 7 and 2008 that I wasn't aware of. This is from one of my 2008 machines.

Not really. Just for curiosity's sake though, I guess I'd try first settings HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\(Default) to "Explore", reboot and see what happens. Or even deleting (Default) as my Windows 7 and 2008  machines no longer seem to have that value.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas. Looks like I need to mess around more with 7 and 2008 to figure out how exactly they changed things :(

From a command-line prompt with admin privileges run these commands:

regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\actxprxy.dll"
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll"

Then reboot your computer

If that doesn't work try:

Open up a Command Prompt (presumably in Administrator  mode) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
Type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter

This is a symptom of a virus infection.

Can you please post the values in this node in your Registry:

Finally had some opening to reboot this server so I tried most suggestions.

Registry thingys did not work, registering dlls I did already as mentioned on the first post but tried it again, no work. Keyboard thing is not applicable as the server has no keyboard.

Sfc /scannow worked, seems there were corrupt dlls around. I have actually uninstalled internet explorer and yet it screws about with the file explorer, thats really cool.

Thanks for everyones input!
