footer margin in Joomla

can someone help me, I am trying to reduce the margin on the footer of my joomla page, which is user3 module position,  I have tried modifying index.php on the template I am using and template.css file but I can't find a way to decrease the white space please see the attached doc.

I don't know the package in question but most times I encounter this problem a margin has crept into a nested div and is pushing everything else out.

Looks like it might be part of your main content structure. Find the highest container div around your content (use Firebug's 'breadcrumbs' if in doubt) and experiment with a rule like
div.nameofdivhere div { 
margin-bottom: 0 !important; 
}

That'll wipe all the bottom margins for all the divs around your page content. If that fixes this problem (be aware it'll probably also mess up a load of other stuff), you can delete this test rule and start digging to find the problem element and change it. Also try setting margin-top to 0.

(to clarify: I suspect that it might not be a part of the footer that's causing trouble, but a wrapper for the page content that is pushing the footer element down, possibly with a negative margin)
