We send a lot of emails with pdf files attached.  We use Outllok 2003 with Mdaemon email server running with all accounts being IMAP.  If someone creates an email and adds 8Mb of attachments why is it that when the email comes to my InBox Outlook shows it as being 12Mb in size?

Alternativley, check to see if the user is using a singature?
Especially a signature with an images in it.
This is usually the case.
