I have used StoragePoint before.  It works with 2007/2010. They have a free trial on their site.  http://www.storagepoint.com

What real work data are you looking for?  You asked if anyone has used a remote/external blob storage solution for SharePoint.  I said yes, look at StoragePoint.  Be more specific.
