My exchange 2003 Public folder edb is 24GB
The STM is 47GB. Should the .stm be that large?

Do you use webmail? If you use webmail your streaming file could be big(ger).

yes I use webmail. Is that the probable cause? I just want to make sure there is not some maintenance/defrag/backup step that should be taking place to prevent the large size of this file.

Correct. You probably have more web users then " normal" users? You could see the STM file as the database for the webmail users.
