Recover mailbox from an exchange 2003

We used ntbackup from windows 2003 to backup our exchange and now we need to recover the mailbox.  The user has been removed from Active directory and the mailbox is not showing in the System Manager >> Mailbox Recovery Center.

How do i recover the mailbox from the backup now?

You will need to restore the mailbox to the store, create a new user without a mailbox and then attach the mailbox to the new user.

Hi this article, ( http://www.petri.co.il/restore_exchange_2000_2003_with_ntbackup.htm) ,

isn't my entire exchange db is going to be replaced?  I just want to retrieve 2 emailboxes that was deleted.

I created a Recovery Storage Group and then trying to restore the db from a back and i get these errors from the Event Viewer>>Application

----------------------Event ID: 9635
Failed to find a database to restore to from the Microsoft Active Directory.
 Storage Group specified on the backup media is d249bf37-8923-4b9b-a713-c1b88dc11e73.
 Database specified on backup media is Mailbox Store (EMAIL), error is 0xc7fe1f42.

-------------------Event ID: 904
Information Store (3604) Callback function call ErrESECBRestoreGetDestination ended with error 0xC7FE1F42 Database not found.

---------------------Event ID: 8003
End Restore to 'EMAIL\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group' 'Failed'

       Verify:  Off

Consult the backup report for more detail.

--------------------Event ID:8019
 End Operation: Warnings or errors were encountered.
Consult the backup report for more details.

---------------------------------------------------------

Does this mean that my back-up is bad?  I always have the system verify my back and it always passes....
Basically you tell the backup software to restore over the original DB, exchange sees this restore and if it has a matching DB in the RSG it redirects the restore to the RSG.
You can Untick the "this database can be overwritten by a restore " box if you are scared by what I said above.

I got the store mounted and it is showing all the mailboxes.  I recreated the user with the same name in AD without a mailbox and tried to Copy Data or Merge Data and i get an error.  Error is listed below

   <?xml version="1.0" encoding="unicode" ?>
- <taskWizardRun taskName="Recover Mailbox Data" dcName="DOMAIN2" buildNumber="7638" runningAs="Administrator@abc.org">

  </destination>
  </recoverMailbox>

  </item>
  </items>
  </taskWizardRun>
Use exmerge to extract the data out of the mailboxes in the recovery storage group to PST and then import the ones you want or access the PSTs via Outlook
You can't attach users to mailboxes in the RSG, you will need to give the recreated users mailboxes and then import the data into them. Or just use the PSTs from exmerge if you only want the data.
