Testing Frame Relay on 3 cisco 1841 routers - config not working.

I am doing some lab practicefor my CCNA and am trying to do a test for Frame Relay. I have 3 1841 routers in my setup. one has 1 WIC-1DSU-T1-V2, one has 2 WIC-1DSU-T1-V2, and the 3rd router has 1 VWIC2-1MFT-T1/E1 (VWIC2-1MFT-T1/E1 - 1-Port RJ-48 Multiflex Trunk - T1/E1)

I was following some steps to setup the route with 2 WICs as the frame realy switch. I was using the sample setup found at:

http://www.certificationkits.com/ccna-frame-relay-lab/

I had issues with this and could not get either of the routers to connect to the frame relay switch. Now I know that this setup that they showed was using different hardware than what I was using.

Will this work with the WIS cards that I have? Does anyone have any example of configs that I could use?

I believe so.

Can you explain what doesn't work and post your configs? (and please use the "code" feature)

Sorry I was working on this about a week ago and could not get it working, so I removed the config for the Frame Relay for some other testing. I will reconfugre it this weekend and give an update.

Ok,

so I did some more testing and rather than use frame relay i was trying to use hdlc and ppp. I amd having the same issues that i had with frame relay. The link is not coming up at all. Both the protocol and interface are down.

I am testing this between 2 1841's each with a t1 WIC. I have just put in an ip address for each serial interface on each router and set the encapsulation to hdlc. I also used the no shutdown command on both.

I am assuming that there is some configuration that i have not done that will set one of the WICs as the DTE? I can not set the clock rate on either router.

Also do I just need a standard cat5 cable? I have tested with a straight through and a crossover.

sorry i meant to say DCE in the second to last paragragh. When I try to set the clock rate, it says that it can only be done on a DCE.
Are you using a T-1 crossover cable between the two WIC's?

Have you set the framing, line-coding and timeslots on each router?

Ok, I found out that a T1 crossover is different than a ethernet crossover. I set the framing and line coding and made a T1 crossover and it started working.

However I do have 2 more questions.

1. What does the timeslots command do?

2. How do I make one of the routers the DCE? I cannot set the clock rate of the serial interface.
1. It defines how many 64k timeslots are available for the circuit. A full T-1 uses 24 (24 x 64k = 1,544,000bps)

2. You only have to set the clock rate if you're not using a CSU. Yours is in the WIC.

Ok, if I don't define it, will it default to a certain amount of timeslots?

Where do I set the clock rate for the serial connection then? I set it to be clocked internally, but if I want to decrease the speed to below a T1 do I do that with the clock rate or just with the amount of timeslots?

Thank you for all the help. I have not tested the frame realy yet, but I am sure that the cable and service-module config were the issues.
