this installation package cannot be opened

when i try to install HP OfficeJet 7310, I get an error message stating "this installation package cannot be installed. please confirm with application vendor that this is a valid windows installer package"

The most likely reason is that the package is for 64-bit system, and you install on 32-bit. Verify that it's for your platform and your operating system.

I have Microsoft XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Is there some program update I am supposed to install and, if so, which site is it on? I'm trying to reinstall HP OfficeJet 7310. I have successfully installed this on my computer many times before but this time I am having difficulty and I do not understand why.
Check HP Officejet 7310 All-in-One (Q5562A) to see if you have the correct drivers.

You must specify if 32 or 64 bit.

32 bit
I meant on the driver site ;o)
I don't know. How do I find that out?
On that page, in the dropdown select "misrosoft windows xp".

If this is what you already did, then try this solution: http://tinyurl.com/33sekvg
On what page do I select microsoft windows XP in the drop down menu? Please give me step by step instructions.

In frustration, I reformatted my hard drive and restored my computer to it's factory settings and I
STILL got the error message "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that is a valid windows installer package"
I downloaded FixCleaner to update all my microsoft software to the latest and it still won't work. I cannot install the HP Officejet 7310 software completely--only the printer software installs. I can print and copy but not scan because my scanner software will not install. I got the latest driver from this site:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=391182#N500

It still did not work!!!
Here is a screenshot of the page in question:

okay, I went to this site and indicated that my computer was Windows XP--not Windows XP x64.

I bought my computer in 2004 and I don't think it was around in 64 bit at that time. How can I confirm whether my computer has 32 bit or 64 bit windows xp?
Right-click the My computer icon on your desktop and select properties.
> On what page do I select microsoft windows XP in the drop down menu?

on the page from http:#34271463
paulsauve, I already clicked on My computer/properties and it didn't say 32 bit or 64 bit. This is the only information I got from that properties screen:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Dell Dimension 8400
Intel (R)
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00Ghz
2.99 GHz, 1.000 GB of RAM

Nothing about 32 or 64 bit--but I assume that since this is an older computer, it is 32 bit.

Also, I had difficulty installing an update to an adobe acrobat program and got another error message
related to Windows Installer:

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installers service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch".

This is slightly different from the other error message I've been getting when I try to install HP Officejet 7300, which is:

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package".

Again, I have installed and reinstalled Officejet 7310 many times before with no problem--I don't understand why I am having a problem now. I called HP to ask them how to fix my installation problem and they said they no longer provide support for this printer and said it was "obsolete".

Thus, I don't know what to do. I was thinking about buying a new printer--but the fact that I can't update the Adobe software makes me think that it's not a problem with my printer but with my computer.
Sounds like a more expendise enterprise than a new printer... Perhaps you coul try another printer (more recent) to see if the problem persists.
This is the only printer I have. I could buy a new one--but I don't want to spend the money on a new printer only to find out that I have the same problem.

I take it you have no suggestions on how I can deal with this problem with the equipment I have?
did you try the link from http:#34271885 ?
two more ideas:

1. what is the version of Installer? run msiexec /? to find out.

2. on that page from where you downloaded, download "HP Multi-Function Products Driver Bundle - Corporate Only" , which is under "Driver" once you have selected Windows XP. Is this what you downloaded?
Vadunrapp1,

I did try to the link from http:#34271885 and it was not helpful. Specifically, the following file does not appear in my registry:
DFAD2CEE8555CA04E8C905508C8F018E

Regarding your second question, I ran msiexec and discovered I had the following version:
Windows ® Installer. V 4.5.6001.22159

I think this is the latest version...but do you think this version is maybe too advanced for the HP Officejet 7310???

Your third question, I downloaded the HP Multi-Function Products Driver Bundle--Corporate Only and also the the other two:
HP Officejet and Photosmart Basic Software and Driver
and
HP Photosmart full feature software and driver

None of them work. After I download, I run the install and the installation starts but then it stops in mid-stream and closes down. No error signal but it just closes down and does not complete the install.
ok... probably last attempt: are you running this package as administrator of the machine?
I think so--how can I confirm whether I am running it as an administrator?
Open control panel/users, and see what is the type of the user that you are logged on as.

Another way: run command prompt, issue command net localgroup administrators and see if your account is in it.
also: right-click the downloaded file, open its Properties, and if it has the button "Unblock", then press it. User generated image

We are making a progress. Check if there's log file created, most likely in Temp directory; also there can be a record in the event log.
How do I do that? Can you give me step by step directions?
start -> run ; type %temp% ; this will open up Temp directory; switch to Detailed view; sort files by date of creation, and see if on the top there's some file with extension .log, created about the time when you run the installation.

Another way: download Process Monitor from sysinternals.com; capture file write activity while you are running the installation, and see if there's some .log file created.

To see event log, start/run eventvwr .
Good news and bad news. Yesterday, I downloaded a program off the internet called "Hardware Helper", which was supposed to help me update all my drivers. After doing this, I tried to reinstall the new HP Officejet 7310 driver from the hp.com website. However, after doing this, it would only partially install and then stop installing all of a sudden.

Today, I went to "control panels" and discovered there were multiple versions of the Officejet software on my computer. I thought maybe, these versions were interfering with each other--so I used my control panel to uninstall all of them and then I reinstalled the latest HP software. After doing this, I finally had a successful install of the latest software!

The bad news: Although, my printer, fax, and copier work, when I try to scan, I get the following error message:
"An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again."

I don't understand why I am getting this error--the computer is clearly connected to the printer because I can print word documents and since the printer/scanner are all part of the same device, I think that a connection to the printer must also mean there is a connection to the scanner, right?

How do I rectify this scanner problem?

I also want to mention that my printer is not connected to my computer via UBS but through our home network.
> when I try to scan, I get the following error message:

How do you scan? Try opening My Computer, right-click the scanner, and select "scan". If it shows the dialog to select the scanning program, select Scanner and Camera Wizard. Or start Scanner and Camera Wizard from start menu / accessories.

On my computer, I'm getting the same message when I try to scan by Microsoft Office Document Scanning, but Scanner and Camera Wizard works OK.
When I open "my computer" icon, I don't see a scanner icon in the window that opens so I can't click on it
Then try running Scanner and Camera Wizard from Start Menu.
That didn't work either. I got an error message saying "The computer cannot detect the scanner.  Please make sure device is turned on and properly connected to computer. If the computer can still not detect the device, open Control Panel, click Scanners and Cameras, and then click Add Device"

I opened my control panel and it already lists the HP office jet 7300 series as a scanner device and yet the error message tells me it's not connected. I don't understand why.
Does the scanner show up in Device Manager?

You can try this:
1. uninstall the software

2. open device manager and delete the scanner from there, if it's there.

3. unplug the device from the computer

3a (optional, but recommended): search for all .inf files with the name of this device in the body (such as search "OfficeJet") in folder  %windows%\inf; and move them elsewhere

4. put the cd in, and plug the device back into the computer. You should receive "found new hardware", after which the computer should proceed to install the driver from CD. After that open device manager and verify that it has the scanner (and probably the fax modem, if the device supports it), and in Printers; the printer should also appear in My Computer.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and it finally worked. I can scan now!!!

In summary, I think this is why I was having problems. Initially, I tried to install the software using the CD I got from HP. Every time I did this, I get an error message about Windows Installer--and the software was only partially installed. I think this CD was outdated. I went online to get the latest software and had difficulty installing it because I had not uninstalled all of the software that come with the CD. I had thought it hadn't installed at all but when I checked the control panel, the old version was listed as long with the new version with both versions partially installed. So I uninstalled both versions and re-installed the latest HP Officejet 7310 software from hp.com

I think that Hardware Helper program helped also because it updated many of my outdated drivers.

If I try to install the software from the CD, I get the Windows Installer message...I think that software is designed for an older version of the Windows Installer program than I have, which is why it didn't work.

Anyway, thanks for all your help. I'm all set now.
Great that it's resolved. At this point, it's probably time to close your question.
If I understand correctly, the initial problem, error message "This installation package cannot be installed. Please confirm with application vendor that this is a valid windows installer package", has been resolved by http:#4293084 - even though this was not the last problem with this installation.

If so, then I suggest to accept http:#4293084. In the future, someone looking for the solution to this specific error message, will find in the E-E's KB exactly the action that has removed it, which was unblocking the file.
