MS SQL issues after update. WIndows cannot start the SQL server. Unable to uninstall SQL Server 2005

Brief history:

This machine is running XP Pro.  The issue started with ACT! by Sage Premium 2009 (11.0).  After a Software Distribution Service 3.0, ACT came up with an error message that SQL was not running.  Attempts to manually start the SQL Server (ACT7) service fail with a "Windows could not start the SQL Server (ACT7) on local computer.  For more information, review the system event log.  If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 17113.  I have also seen "The SQL Server (ACT7) service terminated with service-specific error 17113."

Actions Taken:
Attempted system restore to several points before the possible culprit (software dist service 3.0).  Attempted to uninstall SQL but it keeps failing.  Attempted to uninstall and reinstall ACT but the reinstall cannot be completed as the SQL install fails.

Please advise

Hi,

For some reason on my workstation at work, I ALWAYS have to reset the service account password for SQL 2008 and SQL 2008r2 - the agent is okay and can start once I've sorted out SQL.

See if this fixes your problem.

That is, go in to services applet, right click on SQL Server, select properties, click start. Check Error Message. Select logon tab, re-enter the password (twice) click apply, click ok if theres a message box about log on as service right, select general tab, and click start.

What's the error message when you attempt to uninstall SQL?

I uninstalled ACT withe the ACT Uninstaller 11.0 to start with a clean slate.  When I try to reinstall ACT, it fails during the SQL portion with this message:  "Microsoft SQL 2005 Setup.  There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard.  You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more information."  I am not sure where the setup logs are stored so I was not able to review them.  I tried running ACTDIAG but since ACT is uninstalled that will not work. Any ideas on getting ACT and SQL reinstalled successfully? Thank you
When running the Uninstaller, did you also select to remove SQL (it's an option)?

Yes and to remove the ACT7 instance
Try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916760

Failing that, you'll need to do a manual uninstall of SQL

Still working through this, I will try the manual SQL install

This PC seems to have other issues.  I have tried the solutions with limited progress.  Reinstalling windows completely should fix the issue
