Replication error Windows Server 2003

3 Windows Server 2003. Server 1 was the Domain Controller. All FSMO Roles transferred to Server 2. Server 2 died (permanently). FSMO roles seized to Server 3.

Performed metadata cleanup successfully. Now I have errors having replication from Server 1 to Server 3. Server 2 still appears in AD Sites and Services. The following error ; EVENT ID 13508 The File Replications service is having trouble enabling replication from Server 1 to Server 3 for c:\windows\sysvol\domain using the DNS name Server1

I need detailed assistance in resolving this issue as soon as possible. I beforehand thank you for the assistance!

In Active Directory Sites and Services I see server 1. server 2 (doesnt exist) and server 3. NTDS for Server 3 is blank.

Do I delete Server 2, even if it gives me the warning that it is a container and contains other objects?
Mike Kline

Yes, that is the box that died and is not coming back right?
Radhakrishnan

After the metadata cleanup have you deleted the DNS entries for the failed server? May be the 3rd DC is still looking for the DNS for the failed DC...check that once.

How do I delete the DNS entries for the failed server?
Radhakrishnan

In the DNS snap-in, expand the zone that is related to the domain from where the server has been removed.
Remove the CNAME record in the _msdcs.root domain of forest zone in DNS. You should also delete the HOSTNAME and other DNS records.
Also you have to remove the reverse lookup if any.

I apologize for not responding quickly...

I will attempt removing it from the DNS and advise accordingly.

Thanks

I am unable to delete Server 2 from AD Sites and Services. I receive the following error;

Object Server 2 is a container and contains other objects.... Do not delete the Server 2 container object. Contains objects representing domain controller Server 2 and possibly other domain controllers...

Do I ignore and proceed with DNS removal ?
Radhakrishnan

Yeah.. you can proceed the DNS removal.

Would making Server 3 a global catalog assist in replicating? It currently is not.

I have deleted all DNS entries for Server 2

Yes you have to make this server as GC.

Ok, I just made it a gc but will have to wait a few hours before restarting. I will advise accordingly.

I just rebooted, I take it that it will take a bit to see if replication works?

Event ID 13508 continues in Server3:

1- FRS can not correctly resolve the DNS name "Server1 from this pc
2- FRS is not running on Server1
3-The topology info in AD has not yet replicated

In Server 1 I receive:

Event ID 1925 - Verify the source domain controller is accessible.... The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of DNS lookup failure.

I need this issue resolved.

It seems we are up and replicating now. Any further issues, I'll open a new question.

Thank you very much for all your detailed help!
